Monday Morning Inspiration/Staying the Course

December 17, 2018 by Mary

Some thoughts on the start of a new week and apprehension and worry:

Sometimes life is hard and we are presented with challenges that seem insurmountable, but there is virtue in staying the course. Because we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love him. Romans 8:28–we also know that we can begin a new week with new hope because He promises us hope. Perhaps you are starting your week with apprehension, with a multitude of worries and it seems that you don’t know which way to turn.

Love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 1 Corinthians 13:7

God never meant for us to settle. He wants us to move forward in trust and hope. Imagine the way you would like 2019 to end. That’s a year away, but we need to begin with the end in sight. God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love him. How would you like to be serving God a year from now?

Perhaps God is asking you to do something for Him that will touch the lives of others, but you are not being obedient because you are not staying the course. You know what He has asked of you, but you don’t make time to discipline yourself enough to accomplish what it is that He wants you to achieve. Obedience requires us to stay the course and once we are on course, our Father in heaven will direct our paths so everything will work together for good. We must daily apply to the merits of Jesus, that we may become vessels which He can use to the fullest.

The Lord will guide you always. Isaiah 58:11 Imagine yourself standing next to Jesus. Close your eyes and look upon him. Thank him for the times He has loved and accepted you with open arms, despite your weaknesses. Think of someone you know that could use that same kind of love and acceptance. Ask Jesus to give you the opportunity to share His love and acceptance for whomever He intends for you to touch in the coming year.

May our Lord, who welcomes us again and again, open our hearts to gratitude for His incredible love, and may we live each day thankfully and joyfully.

Love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 1 Corinthians 13:7

Stay the course. Persevere. Look for opportunities to serve and be a blessing to the Kingdom this week and in the coming year.

Holy Spirit, help us to keep our eyes on Jesus! Help us to trust you to get us through this week and to work out the things in our lives that need worked out–guiding our paths. May we be intentional about the purpose you have for us this week and in the coming year, to bring hope into the lives of others. We know, Lord, that you never meant for us to settle and be lukewarm. Renew a fire within us, that we may guard ourselves with truth. Amen.

Self-Care=Soul Care Wednesday

Self-Care = Soul Care

“The farther the outward journey takes you, the deeper the inward journey must be. Only when your roots are deep can your fruits be abundant.” Henri Nouwen

I love the spiritual works of author, Henri Nouwen. If you are in interested in taking your spiritual development a step deeper, here are links to a few of his books.

The Inner Voice of Love: A Journey Through Anguish to Freedom

Life of the Beloved

Advent and Christian Wisdom

When I began my spiritual journey into Healthcare/Clinical Chaplaincy, I sat at the feet of a great leader named, Urias Beverly. At the time, Urias was the Dean of Detroit Ecumenical Theological Seminary and a working pastor and licensed marriage and family therapist. Urias led the way on my inward journey. He gave me books to read, counseled me through things I had been carrying and the start of greater spiritual development. I have never had a greater teacher.

“If we want to grow, we must be willing to look at our own stuff”, was his advice to our group of clinical chaplains. We had group therapy, dissecting our relationship with our patients each day. It was grueling and sometimes people left the room in tears. But at the same time, there was a richness to his teaching that grew me deeper than any other experience. I had to dig deep inside of myself to see why I reacted to things the way that I did and what I was feeling that made me react that way.

Spiritual growth is painful, but if we desire to grow, we must walk through the pain of our own person, our own experiences and our reactions and feelings toward and during those experiences.

Here are some reasons to find a spiritual director, pastor or counselor who can help you grow:

  1. You have been through experiences that you would like help processing or sorting through without judgement or criticism.
  2. If you want to cultivate spiritual growth and practices in your life. Sometimes we need others to help us through practices like celebrating the sabbath, developing a consistent prayer habit, reflection, and retreat.
  3. You desire to deepen your relationship with God but need some direction. The most important relationship we have in our lives is our relationship with our Creator. Spiritual directors, pastors and Christian counselors can help you explore a deeper relationship with Christ.
  4. You desire guidance in important life decisions or changes. Simple as that-sometimes you need wise counsel to help  you navigate decisions that can be life changing.
  5. You have a desire to discover your purpose and calling. We each have a unique purpose here on earth; something God put us here to do. Sometimes we need guidance as we try to discover these things and a wise counselor can help you to create space in life for your passions and callings.
  6. Share joys, fears and other life experiences in a safe environment. We all need relationship  with others to share our life experiences. Our souls long to be heard.
  7. Spiritual healing. Sometimes we carry the weight of our past experiences with us and they seem to weigh us down and prevent us from moving forward with all that God has for us.

If we want to bloom, we must plant seeds. My mission for 2019 is to plant seeds, grow even deeper and walk with you along your path. The foundation of our wellness is the spirit. Everything grows from there. A healthy spirit gives life to the body.

Have a great Wednesday. Take care of your spirit today. Be aware of your feelings today and the way you react to things. Take a mental picture. It will show you where you are and you can begin to unravel the WHY.

This will be something added to the website in 2019.

Monday Morning Inspiration

December 2, 2018 by Mary

Friends,

Happy Monday.

Focus on the benefits of your faith this week. Recite each of the scriptures and think about how powerful they are and what God’s promises mean in your life. Doing so will help to change your attitude and perception of way things really are. Don’t let your attitude keep you small.

Here are some Biblical truths to meditate upon as you start your week:

God has made everything beautiful for its own time. Ecclesiastes 3:11

God’s love and kindness will shine upon us like the sun that rises in the sky. Luke 1:78

God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19

The Lord will hold you in His hand–a splendid crown in the hand of God. Isaiah 62:3

You are worth far more than rubies. Proverbs 31:10

Focusing on the goodness of God and His truths helps to cultivate a happy heart and a fulfilled life. A happy heart is a product of belief.

Almighty God, by the love of Jesus Christ, you draw our hearts to faith. In faith, we find true happiness. May we show our joy by loving others (even those who are hard to love), and embracing those who are broken. From your goodness, we have received all that we need or could ask for and it is through your grace that we freely give. Let us live with joy in our hearts as we think of your love and your plans for us. Amen.

Here are some worship and hymns for you today. You can play them on your computer or ipad as background music during your day.

Here is a great book to help you live a happy life (buy it on Kindle. The font on the actual book is too tiny to read comfortably).

Travel the high road this week, sweet friends. Choose to think about the best things.
