Accepting Yourself

November 8, 2013 by Mary

Accepting Yourself

Self-acceptance and the evolution of learning to accept oneself breaks the barrier of defeat in our lives. Self-acceptance gives us wings to soar to greater heights, no longer weighed down by thoughts of doubt and failure. We are elevated spiritually, emotionally and intellectually through this discovery.
During my recent visit to the gym, a woman stopped to inquire about a membership. Talking with the woman at the desk she said, “I hate my body so much that I have not looked at myself in the mirror for four years.” She continued, “I need to do this…I need to do this…” as if trying to convince herself.
As I was leaving I whispered to her, “You can do this.” Immediately, she began to cry. “Oh, thank you, thank you. I needed to hear that. I needed that encouragement.” I thought about this encounter during my drive home, and it suddenly struck me that when we move in the direction of caring for and loving ourselves more fully on any level, we own our own infinite power. When the woman walked into the gym she began to own her power.
Shutting off the rest of our lives and the world, carving out time to get in touch with our own needs helps us grow in love and acceptance and to come into the light of all that is good and strong and wonderful about ourselves.

A friend lived in a marriage where she was told that the things she admired most about herself were not to be counted, that her passions were merely “hobbies”…insignificant. Day after day her husband tried to rob her of everything that she felt was beautiful inside of her, the gifts God had given her to share with the world. His constant verbal abuse eroded her sense of worth and self-esteem. I could see it in her demeanor: the way she carried herself, the way she walked and the way she communicated with others.
Many women never discover their own true inner beauty and worth. Accepting ourselves requires persistence, continuing on despite fear and days of depressive self-reflection. Accepting ourselves requires us to identify our mistakes, forgive and move forward. Self-acceptance is a daily process of admitting that we have had bad experiences, but they will not defeat us or hold us back from being everything God created us to be. God is our great Redeemer, and He will help us find a way out.
As women we tend to give all that we have, opening ourselves up emotionally and sharing from the heart. We need to feel cherished, to feel special and to be recognized for our own unique gifts. As women we grow to love ourselves better as we age. We grow softer, gentler and kinder. We grow in wisdom and grace and, intentionally or not, we learn from our mistakes. God gives us the tools of self-discovery, although sometimes they arrive late in life. He will open a door and say, “walk through it.” Once we walk through it, he continues to give us bursts of insight about our past, present and future.
Two months later the woman at the gym approached me and said, “Thank you for believing in me…I didn’t believe in myself. You made a difference and I feel so much better.” Each time she visits the gym, she is learning to accept herself…a process of healing many years of hurts.
When we move in the direction of caring
for and loving ourselves more fully on any level,
we own our own infinite (great, large, inexhaustible) power.
If I could broadcast a message to all women it would be:
You are BEAUTIFUL.
You are TALENTED.
You are SPECIAL in the eyes of God.
You are WORTHY.

You are ABLE… (to do exceedingly, abundantly more than you could ever dream)

You already have ALL THAT YOU NEED.
You are a MIGHTY, POWERFUL force.
Invest in YOURSELF (God made you in His image…)

Move on.
You are the daughter of a King! He created you to be a mighty force in this world. He knows your value… do you?

Prayers For The Coming Week

November 4, 2013 by Mary

Monday

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10

Prayer: Dear Lord, please give me courage to get through this day today and whatever it may bring. I will concentrate on casting my cares upon you, as I know you will uphold me no matter what the situation. You tell me not to be dismayed and I take comfort in knowing that you are my strength. Thank you for the great future you have planned for me. I will rest knowing that you are the author of my future. Amen.

Tuesday

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the peace, which you have given me. I will confess peace over my life today—a peace, which transcends all understanding; that I may be in the midst of turmoil and those around me, will be in wonder at my lack of anxiousness. Thank you God that you will guard my heart and mind from anxiousness and that you seek only the best for my life. Amen.

Wednesday

“Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?” (Luke 12:25-26)

Prayer: Lord, I pray that you will help me to cast my burdens upon you rather than try to solve them myself. I understand that worry is an attempt to control things for which I have no control. Rather, I will concentrate on praying for and seeking your counsel for my life. Help me draw close enough to you that I give you everything; that I communicate with you openly about my fears, cares, and burdens. Amen.

Thursday

“Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall.” (Psalm 55:22)

Prayer: Thank you Lord for carrying me when I cannot walk on my own. Thank you that you are all that I need and with you, I have more than enough. Thank you for helping me sustain through the difficulties of life. Thank you that you give me blessing after blessing and that in you I am rich and free. Amen.

Friday

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. Life is more than food and the body more than clothes.” (Luke 12:22-23)

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you that you have met all my needs. Thank you that I have someone with whom I can rely. Help me to recognize the important things in this day. Help me to put away the things of the world that plague me, knowing that life is so much more than material things. Thank you that I do not have to worry about my life, what I will eat, about my body, or what I will wear—that you have it all covered! I am free from the bondage of worry today! Amen.

Saturday

“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.” (Matthew 6:28-29)

Prayer: Lord, today I confess freedom from worry over my life. I will strive to have a deeper relationship with you so that during momentary relapses of worry, I have a friend in whom I can trust with my deepest fears; a friend who cares about all creatures great and small, a friend who has the cure for all of my ailments, and a friend in whom I may find transcendent peace. Invade my heart and mind today Lord. Amen.

Sunday

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”(Matthew 6:34)

Prayer: Lord, help me be present in the moment TODAY—putting tomorrow off until tomorrow! I will rest in your perfect peace today, knowing that whatever comes…you and I can handle it together. Fill me with joy today Lord. In that joy, may I recognize the many blessings in my life. I want to see myself through your eyes today Lord. Please help me do that! Amen.

A Word of Encouragement

We all go through times of fear and uncertainty in our lives, but the Lord tells us not to be dismayed, but rather, give everything to him, casting our cares through prayer and petition. Petition means talking with God about the needs in our lives, asking for his help. It is so amazing that we have a God who listens and cares about our needs!

This week think about how much time you spend worrying. In Luke 12:25-26, it says, “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?”…Worry never solves a problem; it can actually create problems for us, such as lack of peace of mind, emotional difficulties, and ill health. The bible tells us in Matthew 6:34, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Sometimes we spend time worrying about the problems we foresee for tomorrow and things we expect to happen.

Take some time this week to write out some of the burdens on your heart. When you begin to worry about these burdens again, bring out your list and pray over it. Ask God to reveal to you what he would have you to do to solve each of these issues in your life. Take notes when things come to mind. Ask God for his perfect peace and favor. Ask God to help you let go and give him control.

Friday Five: Good Prayers

November 1, 2013 by Mary

Prayer: Dear Lord, help me understand that the work I do each day is part of my witness to those around me and to the world. Whether I am a stay at home mom or one who goes to a 9-5 job each day, show me the influence that my work may have on those around me. Help me to do what I do with love, care and reverence… from the simplest task to those tasks on a larger scale. Clothe me with a sweet, serving Spirit.  Amen.

Prayer:  Dear Lord, thank you that you supply me with everything I need and that my life is filled with abundance so that I am able to extend a helping hand and a listening ear to those who need a friend. It is through you that I understand the meaning of friendship because your love for me is so filled with Grace. Give me opportunities to serve out of my abundance. Show me ways to lend a helping hand. Awaken me to opportunities to turn my ear toward someone who needs a friend. Thank you Lord. Amen.

Prayer: Lord, I realize that hard work is indispensable to success of any kind. Let me not pray that you would do the work for me, but that I will have the power, strength and the faith to accomplish that which you put before me. Help me make the best use of my time and resources Lord. I desire diligence and balance in all things. I pray for your wisdom to prevail upon me as you lead me in your  power and strength. Amen.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you that while you are an all-knowing God, you allow me to learn for myself through trial and error,  mistakes and hardships. Thank you for being such a patient and understanding teacher. Through your loving kindness I grow and learn about myself and the world around me. Show me through my experiences, what works for me, what lifts me up, what I can offer the world and what I should expect of others. Thank you that I know forgiveness and gentleness and I practice it on others and myself. Amen.

Prayer:Lord, may my words bring life and wisdom. Guard my heart and mind from those things that would cause insult, harm or injury to others. There is power in the tongue—in the words that we use; they can bring life or death. Lord, I want to bring life. I want to speak blessings upon those around me. Guard my heart. Help me recognize thoughts that are contrary to your goodness Lord. Amen.

Godly Purpose

October 30, 2013 by Mary

It is human nature to aspire to do great things, but healthier to be happy with yourself just as you are and know that you are loved and valued beyond anything your hands can do or any tasks you may perform. When we still ourselves and focus on the beauty of each moment, giving thanks– we are more likely to find purpose.

As Mother Teresa so aptly put it, “we can do no great things, only small things with great love.” Maintaining spiritual health through prayer, meditation, fasting and solitude will supply us with inner peace and an understanding that God does not judge us by performance, He looks at our heart.  “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind.” Luke 10:27. When we put God first and give him our hearts, he will help us find purpose.

Mother Teresa understood the infinite value of humanity because she spent her days in simple adoration, serving God. She saw him in every deed and in every face and therefore, her work became a daily act of service to her creator. When we listen for God’s gentle voice, He gives us an understanding of His great Love for us and the wisdom to know that deeds cannot get us to heaven…busyness….fruitless effort, achievement and success do not define purpose. God is our purpose. Worship is our purpose…putting other things first is simply distraction.

The discontented places in our hearts do not stem from a lack of purpose, but rather–from a lack of understanding that we are truly loved—with a shalom kind of love… (Complete, perfect and full). Our Godly purpose is to live Shalom. “We can do no great things, only small things with great love.”
